The Capitals are extremely fortunate to be up 2-1 in this series. As we mentioned in our series preview analysis, they have been able to rely on their elite offensive skill to score timely goals. As a team, they have the worst metrics out of any team in the NHL playoffs. They are last (16th) out of all teams in possession time, last (16th) in scoring chances generated, last (16th) in high-danger scoring chances. The discrepancy in overall play was evident when Carolina returned back home for game 3 and slammed Washington 5-0; their most lopsided postseason victory since Game 2 of the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals. Game 3 was a domination, Carolina outshoot them 45-18 and out-chanced them by a staggering 40%. The Hurricanes’ Game 1 and 2 losses were on the head of Petr Mrazek who posted an .851 Save %, before recording an easy 18 save shutout in game 3. Braden Holtby hasn’t been lights out by any means with a .902 Save % and if Mrazek can match his numbers tonight Carolina should come away the win.
